My name is Monica Gentile, in 2013 I spent two months on the Swiss Alps, working as a shepherd with 250 goats.
In 2015 I repeated the experience on the Dolomites Alps with a hundred cows.
The work consisted of waking up every morning at dawn and walk all day looking after the animals and counting them.
Herding the cattle means knowing how to communicate with the animals, to make them move, by defining borders with the body and the voice.
I realized that this activity and dancing have similarities, both require to actively relate with the space.
I have experienced time and space expansion, I opened my eyes.
I became fascinated by the alpine environment, because of its huge spaces, mountains, the physical feeling of ascending, the lightnings, the echoes, the cattle and flock’s bells.
Sheep-farming is an activity that belongs to the past, but it still has a value and a social impact. I refer to qualities such as spontaneity and the farmers’ hard life.
I want to show that we belong to the same past and to point out the distance we are taking from nature.
